Audubon 5" Plush Bird - Common Redpoll

Acanthis flammea

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Fringillidae

This Common Redpoll is a very small finch with a red forehead, black chin, and small bill and conical. The body is rather plump which conveys its colorful contrast of earthtones and firey reds. This male showcases upperparts of dark and pale edges which wear off during the latter Spring and into the Summer months.

This male's diet consists of insects, berries, and downed vegetation.  Redpolls actually have throat pouches that temporarily store seeds for transfer to their nests or young. This species can be found mostly in the Northeastern United States up to Canada. These birds nest in traditional twigs, rootlets, and grasses which are lined with a thick layer of hair and feathers to provide warmth for eggs or newborns. You can spot these little birds hanging upside down occasionally.

Redpolls breed in subartic forests, scrubs, and bushes. They tend to avoid dense forestation for visual purposes in staying away from larger predators.

Audubon has taken this Common Redpoll and created a realistic plush toy with Wild Republic that makes authentic bird calls, perfect for that bird watcher enthusiast. The more you squeeze this little bird, the more you'll want to go outside and find the real thing!
