Audubon 5" Plush Bird - Turtle Dove

Streptopelia risoria

Order: Columbiformes

Family: Columbidae

The Turtle-Dove is so common that its wild origins tend to be unknown. It's a medium sized bird with a small head and a buffed body. The tail is square and medium to long. Juveniles of this species are pale and dull, but the grayish red feet and legs bring color out. This male's eyes are encapsulated by a red tuft and his body is covered in a turtle shell pattern, also accenting his neck which is striped black and white.

Turtle-Doves' diet consist of insects, worms, or picked vegetation; mainly along ground fall. This bird makes its nest in dense, wooded areas and occasionally large gardens. Being extremely timid (because of it being hunted during migration), Turtle-Doves are hard to spot within their personal habitat and space.

You can find Turtle-Doves in and around Europe, ranging from Mediterranean countries to Scandanavian regions in the warmer months. It migrates to Southern Africa in the winter and latter fall.

Audubon has taken this Turtle Dove and created a realistic plush toy with Wild Republic that makes authentic bird calls, perfect for that bird watcher enthusiast. The more you squeeze this little bird, the more you'll want to go outside and find the real thing!
